CicLAvia March 2017
A hush fills the early morning where last nights busy streets now devoid of cars sets the stage for CivLAvia a popular public street event free to participants, inspired by the “open streets” festivals in Bogata, Columbia. (“ciclovias” meaning “bikeways.”)
October 2010 kicked off the first of these street events in SoCal, offering a safe place for cyclists and runners alike to traverse city streets free of motorists. CivLAvia’s popularity has quickly grown to become a four time a year event, with plans to go monthly, no small feat considering traffic in these densely populated cities.
An estimated 100,000 participants rode the six mile course via Venice Blvd., Centinella, Washington Place and Washington Blvd., from Venice beach to Culver City. Most participants rode bicycles while others rode scooters, unicycles, roller blades, skates and skateboards. The course welcomed runners and pedestrians alike, every age group represented. Many lined city streets to watch the spectacle of passers by wearing esoteric costumes.
