L.A.’s World Naked Bike Ride 2017
The afternoon of June 10th in Los Angeles, California 326 men and women (according to officials) came out to participate in a group bike ride for a cause. The cause? To change current oppressive dependence on cars, take up human powered bicycles and bring joy back to transportation, after all traffic in LA isn’t getting any lighter. If you’ve ever driven in LA traffic you could probably get behind the cause. The dress code? According to the event organizer, “We’re talking bare butts on bicycle seats and delicate bits flopping in the breeze, – ride as bare as you dare.” What’s that you say? Well this is the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) after all. An event held around the world in twenty countries and in seventy cities from Boston, Mass to Los Angeles, California, Buenos Aires, Argentina to Brisbane, Australia, a truly global event.
Why ride in the nude? Participants “ride in celebration and jubilation to deliver a vision of a cleaner, safer, body-positive world to the masses.” Evidently nude people are nice too, who knew? Have no fear body paint is encouraged as well as other types of “creative expression.” The order of the day is nude not lewd. Taboos include; fetish gear, genital jewelry and erections. From all appearances nudity in not illegal if done correctly.
No fees to participate no event jersey to buy, however the organizer asks that you help support the event with a donation to cover expenses, e.g., from traffic escorts and porta potties to wristbands and spare loaner bikes etc. Speaking of “cover,” for those who aren’t comfortable taking it all off rest assured you will not be harassed or ostracized for participating either partially or fully clothed. Keep in mind however that nudity is a large part of this event hence the name, “World Naked Bike Ride 2017” or “WNBR.” The shock and awe of bystanders was every bit as entertaining. It’s not every day one sees hundreds of adult men and women riding bicycles along LA city streets in the raw. Bystanders could be heard muttering, “Can we take pictures of this?” and “I’m posting this online!
As for an entry fee participants were instructed to register the day of the event and will be “debriefed” at that time. You can’t make this stuff up! If you missed WNBR LA 2017 mark your calendars now for next years LA event – June 23, 2018! Be bare or be square.
