Finding Motivation to Ride
Can’t count how many times I set out to ride only to find myself too busy, too tired, and most of the time unmotivated to make the effort. There’s definitely a long list of excuses we can come up with, “The weather is bad, my bike isn’t ready, I’m not ready, probably get dropped on that one hill, don’t know if I’ll make it on time, the cat probably needs me at home.” Okay, maybe not that last excuse, but those are some of the excuses I’ve battled with, you can probably think of some of your own.
If we are honest with ourselves, it really is just a lack of motivation. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” When you REALLY find that desire, you will make the time, the effort, and just do it, and 90% of the time I set out to go riding I don’t actually feel like it, not until I’m out on my bike wearing my cycling kit, shoes and start pedaling for that first mile that I’m reminded why cycling is so much fun. There are a few reasons (besides staying healthy) that keep me on a steady weekly streak of spinning those legs past my excuses.
Whether discovering a new route, visiting a local cafe while sipping on that “new espresso style coffee”, munching on a pastry, or conquering a new personal record, and best of all, the reason to escape.
We’ve all been on rides that take us out of the city and out of the norm, feeling like we’ve reached another destination. For me, every ride is a mini vacation.
What motivates you? What keeps you from hitting the snooze button? What gives you that extra oomph that you need to get going past those pesky objections? Find your motivation, get out and ride, just do it!
