Support Your Local Bike Shop
Advanced Sports Enterprises (ASE), parent company for the Performance Bicycle retail chain with its 104 locations, as well as Bike Nashbar and distributor ASI, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection November 2018. Expected is the closure of approximately 40 Performance stores within two or three months after filing. Performance Bicycle brands include, Fuji, Kestrel, Breezer, SE Racing, Phat, Tuesday Cycles, and the component brand Oval Concepts.
Performance Bicycle thrived with consistency in discounted goods along with their experienced bike mechanics who equally shared a passion for detail that kept customers going back.
Of course, nothing lasts forever and we have to learn to move on, however we cannot ignore how this will affect the employees and their families and the many loyal customers of Performance Bicycle. There is a hope that this retail giant can with some carefully planned reorganization and renegotiation of remaining store leases make a comeback, albeit on a smaller scale. The Performance Bicycle retail chain has been a valuable asset of the community for many cyclists and its total loss would be sorely felt.
What can we learn from this? Without question, you will find discounts shopping online for a new bike, parts and or bike accessories, however, you should never discount the value of the one on one service and support experience you will receive from your local bike shop. You might be surprised by the wealth of knowledge you’ll gain spending time with your bike mechanic or bike shop salesperson. What they do often times is much more than a job, it is their passion. You can’t put a price tag on that, or a discount.
