CicLAvia is considered the, “biggest open streets event in the USA,” consisting of a series of cycling events free to the public all across Los Angeles County since 2010. City streets close temporarily to automobile traffic where the community takes to the streets on bicycles, skateboards, some run, some walk. To date these events have been enjoyed in Los Angeles County by over one million people. Nothing motorized allowed with the exception of wheelchairs. People can get very reative with their choice of non-motorized transportation. At the very least it’s fun to watch!
These events were inspired by ciclovia in Bogata, Columbia, a Spanish term meaning “cycleway.” Columbia’s event closes a stretch of highway approximately 76 miles long every Sunday to more than 1.7 million people. Bogota’s event is is touted as, “the world’s most successful mass recreation event.” It’s an event that has inspired many others to give it a try, albeit on a much smaller scale. The benefits are there however, bringing community together, slowing the mode of transportation, improving air quality, improving health, inspiring fitness. What a great concept! Please consider taking part in these events. Enjoy the ride as many times as you like from 9:00am and 4:00pm, without worry of cars, young and old alike are welcome. See YOU there!
